Welcome to Cornhill Farm!

This is a guide to help you enjoy your stay with us while we work on your pride and joy.

As you can see we’re surrounded by fields, our nearest neighbours are about 400m away!

Pure bliss.

Hopefully we have something that will appeal to you.

Coffee Shop - Childrey Stores

Known as the place with the best coffee in the area!

… a small village shop with professional barristers that have a passion for excellent coffee. Cyclist groups love it.

They also do some excellent meals and some light tasties.

Easy to walk to (about 15mins) along a hard (non-muddy) surface. Suitable for cycling too.

Limited indoor seating.

Dogs not allowed inside unfortunately.

Walk/Cycle to the Coffee Shop

The whole route is paved (or tarmac), suitable for walking and cycling. Popular with dog walkers and people walking between Childrey and East Challow.

It’s a very pleasant walk with a delicious cup of coffee as a reward.

Mellors Garage - Fuel and Small Shop

Good fuel prices

A small shop (typical filling station shop)

Laundromat

A walk along the Stream

The blue lines show all the nearby walks, with a nice stream to the North

Most of these walks will be muddy in the rainy season, perfectly walkable but preferably with good boots (or wellies).

A walk to the School

This is a nice little walk along mostly hard surface. Not usually muddy even in heavy rains.

Also good for cycling.

A walk to Wantage

A fairly long walk, could take around 45mins.

Suitable for cycling.

Hard surface all the way, no need for wellies.

Wantage

To get to Wantage:

  • Walk

  • Cycle

  • We’ll drop you off and pick you up

As far as recommended places go, this is subjective! Your tastes may differ 🙂

If you simply want a cuppa then the Bay Tree cafe and Marmalade are good options.

For a sit-down meal Bay Tree and Wildwood are great for good quality food, good service and relaxing atmosphere.

If you want to sit down quietly for a few hours The Bear Hotel is a good option. Or for just an hour or two any of the restaurants.

Or maybe you’d like to catch a bus to Oxford - that’s a nice way to spend a few hours as the ride is quite pretty. The bus stop is just outside Costa Coffee, if the statue of King Alfred looked slightly left he’d be watching the busses. At the time of writing buses run every 30mins during busy times and every hour in less busy times.

North

Wildwood restaurant do a really nice meal. We’ve been there several times and never disappointed. They cater well for gluten free.

Also North are a number of stores including Boots and Holland & Barret

East

Our favourite to the East is a really nice 2nd hand bookstore. Thousands of books, if you’re into reading you’ll easily spend an hour in there. There are other bookstores that aren't nearly as interesting, so make sure you find the right one!

Also to the East along Wallingford St are some stores, a bakery and a really nice Chinese takeaway.

South

South down Newbury St are some really nice places to eat.

Our favourite is the Bay Tree Cafe. Really nice food, tea and coffee. Owned/run by a team of very pleasant ladies. We’ve never had a dud meal. Their brekkie is so nice! Also cater well for gluten free.

Also a favourite is the Yummy Thai. Treat yourself to a “Weeping Tiger” (Roger’s personal favourite).

Just South of the square (slightly West) you’ll find Costa Coffee and The Bear. Some locals absolutely love The Bear and it has fantastic reviews. For us it’s OK. Roger had a pie there once and didn't finish it. It’s a good place to sit for a few hours if you need to work.

West

To the West you have two great places: Marmalade and King Alfred's head. Marmalade are known for their good coffee …. In our opinion it’s pretty good but not nearly as good as Childrey Stores. Their sausage rolls are outstanding though. King Alfred’s Head is a really nice pub.

There are a few other places where we’ve had good food and service but they sorta come and go. Particularly along Mill St. Claire really likes Buzz Cafe (good gluten-free and dog-friendly).

Way to the North (walk up grove St past Specsavers and then turn Left) there are the big supermarkets.
